BLAST FROM THE PAST
50 YEARS AGO:
The Village of Callaway has hired Leonard H. Hall II of Atlantic, Iowa, as the new village marshal. The 24-year-old marshal served in the Marines for three years and is replacing James Bennett. He and his family will be moving to Callaway as soon as a place to live can be found.
The Chamber of Commerce voted to have most stores closed during the Pioneer Picnic parade and not reopen. The exceptions will be Right Drug and Callaway Market, which will reopen immediately following the parade.
25 YEARS AGO:
A proposal to build a beef packing plant 6 1/2 miles south of Oconto brought local opposition at an information meeting at Oconto Fire Hall. Around 175 people came to hear Seven Valleys L.L.C. pitch the $25 milliion plant they hope to start building this fall. More informational meetings will be held if it looks as if the project will move forward.
Foster Smith knows how to pick a racing duck. He not only had the winning duck during the race at the Loup River, he had the second place duck as well. Jo Chesley sold the winning duck.
