20 YEARS AGO:

It will cost owners of stray dogs and cats if the animals are impounded in Callaway. The Callaway Village Board voted to approve Ordinance 2005-6-1, providing for the impounding of stray animals and the associated fines at the June 7 meeting. Callaway has entered into an interlocal with North Platte for use of the animal shelter and facilities for abandoned dogs and cats from Callaway. Should an animal be impounded, the initial fee for the owner to retrieve the creature will be $130. An additional $10 is assessed per day up to five days. The ordinance went immediately into effect upon passage.

50 YEARS AGO:

The new red whistle installed on the water tower was put there not to replace the old one but to make it possible for sirens to be heard in every part of Callaway. It will aid the Disaster Team and be of comfort to residents, especially to senior citizens and those with little children. The Disaster Team and men of the Emergency Unit are continually on the alert. Remember three blasts mean a fire, two blasts are for the emergency unit, and one long uninterrupted blast is a tornado, TAKE COVER.
