50 YEARS AGO:

Lawrence will provide the opposition as Callaway High School’s unbeaten Bears advance to State Football Playoff action at Blue Hill. Two other Class D teams, Nelson and Homer, also made the playoffs and they will soiree off to determine who will play the winner of the Callaway-Lawrence game for the state championship on Nov. 14.

Jerry Johnson, who lives north of Callaway, shot and killed a porcupine in his hog lot last Tuesday morning. He estimated it to weigh between 30-35 pounds.

20 YEARS AGO:

A fire destroyed a barn and chicken coop, as well as a loader and several other items stored in the tree line at the Robert and Christie Pitkin home on Oct. 25. The Callaway Volunteer Fire Department was called out about 5 p.m., but by that time the structures were already burned to the ground. The Pitkins were not home at the time and there were no reported injuries.

The Lady Bears nearly pulled off an upset over Amherst in the D1-10 volleyball subdistricts, winning the first two sets 25-20, 25-19. However, Amherst gained their footing and came back to win the next three and end Callaway’s season.
