The kids are back in school, and summer is winding down. That means Callaway’s premiere event is just around the corner!

Always held on Labor Day weekend, the 32nd Annual Callaway Kite Flight is set for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 2 and 3. Once again kite flying enthusiasts and those who just enjoy watching are invited to Foster Smith Field, located four miles east of Callaway on Highway 40. Kites will be flown from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will also be special activities throughout the weekend in conjunction with the Kite Flight. A watermelon feed will be offered at the field on both Saturday and Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. There will be face painting and a balloon artist on Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

A special indoor flight will be held Saturday night at the Callaway Community Center beginning at 8 p.m. Then everyone is invited back out to Foster Smith Field at 10 p.m. for a Night Flight.

No event would be complete without food, and the community will offer that too. The Callaway American Legion will host a catfish fry at Henry’s on Saturday, with proceeds going to the Legion’s scholarship fund. Serving will begin at 5 p.m.

An ice cream vendor and a sno cone vendor will be on the grounds during the Kite Flight, and kids can enjoy a ride on the barrel train. Commemorative t-shirts will be available and a portion of the sale of each shirt will go the the Sandhills Cancer Fund. This local organization provides financial support to cancer patients who reside in the Nebraska Sandhills area.

Admission to the Kite Flight is $5 for adults, $3 for children, or $25 for the entire family. Bring your lawn chairs and plan to spend the day.

However, the fun isn’t over when the Kite Flight ends at 4 p.m. on Sunday. The No Excuse Bull Riding will get underway at the Seven Valley Rodeo Grounds that evening, with gates opening at 6 p.m. and performances at 7:30 p.m. Concessions will be available. Admission to the rodeo is $10 per person.
