Being part of the CHS One Act team is a commitment. From memorizing lines to getting the timing just right for the lights, everyone has their part to play pun intended - to make the production a success.

This year’s cast and crew includes several seniors. We were able to catch up with most of them during one of their rehearsals last week and asked them to share what drives them to commit their time and efforts to the play.

One of the senior members of the team is CJ Quandt. He has participated in One Act all four years of high school, and this year plays Adam in the play “The Puppet Master”. Adam is a puppet who falls in love and has his relationship ruined through rumors spread by the puppet master.

“I got involved in One Act because all of the upperclassmen were doing it and I just thought it would be cool. What I like most is not having to be myself during the play,” CJ shared.

Addison Bailey has also been in One Act all four years and has the role of Robyn, the Puppet Master, in this year’s play. Like CJ, she became involved as a freshman because so many others were. “Everybody was in One Act,” she said. “We had some great years where we sent to state a lot so it’s just what everybody did.”

She explained a little about her character, Robyn. “I go around spreading rumors about everyone and adjusting the high school cliques to my liking.”

The role of Markus is played by Dawson Mason, also a four-year One Act team member. “My brother did One Act when he was in school so when I was younger I figured I would do it too. I have really enjoyed acting all four years,” Dawson said.

Dawson shared that One Act is not that much different than the athletic teams he is part of. “You

cont. PAGE 12: One Act still need everyone to pull their own weight and try to get better, just like sports. You can still have a lot of fun with everybody on stage and just try to get better together,” he said.

Dawson describes his character as the one who provides “comic relief”. “He’s just the typical high school stoner, lifting people’s spirits and telling jokes. The play is a pretty serious topic so my character’s purpose is to bring everybody back up.”

Bo Brennan is also in his fourth year of One Acts. “I just saw how much fun the upperclassmen were having and would hear them talk about how much fun it was. It was great coming out as a freshman,” Bo explained.

He describes his character, Ethan, as “an average person” who goes out for Student Council, football, and debate. “I’m just intertwined in everything, then a rumor gets spread that I’m cheating on my girlfriend and ruins it all.”

Jozy Edgington has participated in One Act all four years and for her first three years, she did makeup for the performers. She also served as student director. This year she decided to try being in the cast. “I have no idea why I decided to join the cast this year. Maybe because I’m a senior, and maybe because this play is about high school and I thought I could do that and be a little bit more comfortable,” she said.

Her character, Karen, is a “superficial cheerleader” who flirts with all the boys. “I am super peppy about everything and I love to add to the rumors and spread them,” she said about Karen.

One of the few seniors who has not participated in One Act every year is Kyle Bloomer, who is in his second year with the team. “A group of friends tried to get me to go out the two years before that and I finally decided to try it my junior year,” he said.

This year he plays the jock quarterback of the school named Chance who ends up married to his high school sweetheart. Kyle admits memorizing the lines has been a challenge, but he is having fun doing it.

Caleb McFate is a member of the light crew and has also been in One Act all four years. He decided to follow in the footsteps of his brother and sister who both were involved in One Act. “I’m too afraid of acting so I’m just on the crew,” he said with a shy smile.

He has run the spotlight for the production for three of his four years and was on the set design crew the other year.

Chance Dishman is on sound and is in his first year of One Act. “I decided to try something new,” he said. “I was encouraged just a little bit by my sister and some friends. It’s fun, and one of the things I regret is that I didn’t do it before this year.”

Chance encourages underclassmen to “get out of your comfort zone and do it”.

Four-year One Act member Colton Hicks has been on the light crew all through high school. “It’s fun seeing the progress we make and I have fun entertaining with the lights,” Colton said when asked what made him want to keep doing it every year.

Other senior members of the team include Greeley Hrupek, Caeden Arnold, and Harper Johnson. Unfortunately, they were unavailable during the time these interviews were conducted.

The directors for the CHS One Act are Hannah Beck, Courtney Smith, and Suzi Campbell.
