Never Too Old to Put On Your Boogie Shoes
I am painfully aware of how old I am. Therefore, I do not understand the need for frequent reminders of the season of life I’m currently in. Yet, there they are. For example. Last week, five of my high school friends and I got together to attend a concert at the state fair featuring one of our favorite bands from high school - KC & The Sunshine Band. When I went online to order the tickets the day they went on sale, I noticed it said the concert was on a Monday…at 2:30 in the afternoon. I was sure that had to be a mistake. Who has a concert at 2:30 on a Monday? Well, come to find out, KC & The Sunshine Band does! And to add insult to injury, it was Senior Citizens Day at the fair, so we all got in free.
Monday afternoon or not, senior citizens or not, we had a blast! Two of my besties and I literally danced like we were 17 again, and it was awesome. Yes, I had to take a Tylenol Arthritis pill the next morning, but I digress.
The other day I was looking in the mirror getting ready for work and noticed how funny my eyebrows look. It’s like all of a sudden all of my eyebrow hair is on one side of my brow, while the other side is nearly bald! Then I noticed that might be because the hair from that side of my brow has fallen down to my upper lip!
A few weeks ago I had the privilege of taking recording artist Danny Gokey and his son, who were in Gothenburg for Livin’ Out Loud, to Runza for ice cream. While in the drive-thru, Danny handed me his card to pay - Apple Pay - which obviously I had never used. (I know, but I’m an Android user.) Anyway, as he laughed while showing me how to do it, I made a comment about how that really showed my age. The young girl at the drive-up window then said, “No, what shows your age is your sunglasses!”
Ouch! She was referring to my magnetic sunglasses that just easily attach to my prescription eyeglasses, which are quite handy, thank you very much!
It’s interesting to see how others age when I don’t really feel like I have that much. KC, a heartthrob for us teenage girls in the 70s, is now 75. He joked about how much weight he has gained, saying he has toyed with the idea of renaming the group KFC & The Sunshine Band! We all laughed, but I get it. It’s easier to make a joke and just roll with it, right?
I had T-shirts made for the concert that read, “Class of ‘78, Still Shakin Our Booty”. (If you know, you know.) We all agreed it didn’t seem possible that so many years had passed since we had all been together - 48 to be exact. It was the first time all of us were in the same place at the same time since our graduation day from Loup City High School.
We decided we had too much fun, and life is too short, to let moments like that slip away. So, we are currently planning our next adventure together. I can’t say there will be any booty shakin next time…but I wouldn’t rule it out.
I’ll keep you posted.
