50 YEARS AGO:

A carnival against Muscular Dystrophy was held at the Charles Horn ranch with 76 in attendance. There were games, pony rides, and a train ride around the ranch to see the unusual animals; $128 was collected.

Callaway High School’s football win over Lexington St. Ann’s was definitely a morale booster for the Maroon and Gold. With last spring’s graduation taking a heavy toll in the Bear ranks, it had remained a big question mark whether or not the CHS crew could regroup sufficiently to be a contender. Callaway fans may be in for some excitement again this season.

25 YEARS AGO:

There were people from 20 states and a foreign country who came to watch or participate in the 11th annual Callaway Kite Flight. Organizer Connie May said she heard from longtime kite flyers that the wind was better than any they had had for the last two years anywhere. An estimated 2,500 to 3,000 people passed through the gate, the most this event has ever had.

20 YEARS AGO:

Homecoming week is coming to Callaway High School with a week of special activities leading up to a showdown with the Sandhills Panthers and Lady Panthers on Sept. 15. The theme this year is “Pink the Panthers!”

Dave and Linda Weber of Callaway continue to dominate the annual Callaway Couples Golf Tournament played out on Labor Day. The Webers fired a 37-33 for 70 strokes in the 18-hole best ball tourney.
