After suffering tough losses against Twin Loup and Amherst to begin their season, the South Loup boy’s basketball team picked up a much needed win on Friday, Dec. 13 as they hit the road south to Cambridge.
The first half of the contest was a battle as neither team was able to pull away for a significant lead. The Bobcats took a 5-point lead into the second quarter, winning the first 19-14. However, the second quarter was an even tighter competition with the Trojans managing to outscore the Bobcats by one, 10-9, in the second.
South Loup regrouped during the halftime break and came out firing on all cylinders as they added 17 points to the scoreboard while holding Cambridge to just seven. That point spread ended up being the difference in the game as the teams each scored 17 in the fourth period, to give the Bobcats a 62-48 victory.
On Saturday, Dec. 14, the Bobcats fought long and hard against the Pleasanton Bulldogs. The game was intense the whole way through with two very passionate teams.
The game started with the Bulldogs jumping ahead by 5 points at the end of the first quarter. Through the second quarter, the Bobcats did an excellent job at looking up the court.
One stand-out moment at the beginning of the second quarter happened when junior Dylan Pandorf saved the ball from going out of bounds with a quick toss to senior teammate Harper Johnson. Johnson saw junior Crew Witthuhn waiting at the basket and threw it to him for an open shot.
The teams stayed close throughout the quarter, both scoring 12 points in the second period to make the score 26-21.
The Bobcats came back ready to fight in the second half.
Witthuhn and Pandorf led the team in a come-back scoring 25 of the 36 points in the second half. “We played hard and came out on top,” said Witthuhn. The intense second half resulted in a Bobcat win of 57-50.
The Bobcats will travel to play Medicine Valley on Dec. 20, with JV action getting underway at 5 p.m. and the varsity contest tipping off at 7 p.m.
