South Loup had only one track meet on the schedule last week, and Mother Nature put the kibosh on that one.

The Bobcats were one of seven teams to make the trip to Overton on Tuesday, April 16, for an invitational meet. Though it was raining, unlike many area schools Overton decided to try to hold the meet anyway. Trying to reschedule any event this close to the end of the season and school year is a challenge.

The teams did manage to get the majority of the field events completed before the school called a 30-minute delay for lighting. The teams attempted to resume the competition following the delay; however, the rain and lightning had clearly set in to stay so organizers called the meet and sent everyone home.

The Bobcats had success in the events that were completed. For the men’s team, Rio Remund secured 1st place in the shot put with a throw of 43’ 11. His teammate Pedro Flores had the farthest throw of his career at 38’ 9.25, good for 4th place. Brendan Streit finished 18th with a throw of 23’ 9.

Malachi Neth finished in 7th place in discus with a toss of 100’ 7, and Flores finished 11th with a throw of 86’ 8. Tatum Weise threw 63’ 6 for 17th place.

In pole vault, Dawson Mason cleared the bar at 10’ even to pick up the silver medal. Paxton Bierman vaulted 9’, his personal best, for 6th place, and Uotong Haidle finished 7th with 8’ 6.

Trey Connell had a 4th place finish in long jump with a leap of 18’ 5.5, and Wacey Schultz came in 12th, jumping 13’ 4.

Dylan Pandorf picked up an 8th place medal in triple jump with 36’ 3.75.

For the women, Bryn Schwarz claimed the gold medal in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 8’. In long jump, Erin Fitzgerald had the best jump of her career of 15’ 7 to grab the 3rd place medal. Josie Rieff jumped 13’ 11 for 7th place, and Asa Starr finished 8th with her personal best jump of 13’ 8. Starr also had her best performance to date in high jump with 4’ 6, good for 5th place.

Tahnna Nokes was the 9th place finisher in shot put with a throw of 27’ 2. Kaygan Witthuhn turned in her best throw to date of 24’ 4 to finish 14th, and Evalynn Wonch also had her best throw of 22’ 10, good for 18th place.

The teams are back in action today, April 25, as they compete in the MNAC meet being held in Arnold. They will travel to Sutherland on Tuesday, April 30, for the Best of the Midwest.
