The Lady Bobcats (2-1) treated fans to a show Tuesday in their home opener triangular at Arnold with an easy win 2-0 over Mullen and an exciting victory over rivals Anselmo-Merna 2-0.
“Tuesday was a great night for the team as a whole,” said head coach Desiree Guthrie. “Everyone got a chance to see the floor and get some great touches on the ball.”
It was all South Loup the first set against Mullen with a final score of 25-7. The Lady Bobcats ran away with the lead early in the set with a 15-4 lead over the Broncos.
A Bobcat serving error gave Mullen the chance to score two more points, but great serves by Abby Stallbaumer and Bryn Schwarz gave the Bobcats a chance to score 10 more and come away victorious in set one.
In set two, the younger members of the South Loup team took the court and defeated Mullen 25-12. The two teams stayed close in score during the first part of the second set until a service error by the Broncos seemed to take away their steam and the Bobcats pulled away to win.
The Bobcats were led by senior Abby Stallbaumer with 5 kills, 3 serving aces, and 2 blocks; followed by Lauryn Johnson with 11/11 serves and 5 aces; Ava Pandorf with 14 digs; and Greeley Hrupek with 14 assists.
Game two brought the fireworks between the Lady Bobcats and cross-county rivals Anselmo-Merna. South Loup was out to avenge two losses to the Coyotes last season and after a slow start in the first set, they shook off the jitters and played with high intensity to win.
The Coyotes struck first with an 0-2 lead, but the Bobcats came back to keep the score very tight all game. It was a back-and-forth set, with neither team pulling a commanding lead. Each time the Bobcats scored, the Coyotes responded with a point of their own down to the last volley - but South Loup walked away with the set win by a mere two points, 25-23.
The second set was less balanced with the Bobcats racking up a 25-17 win. The Coyotes didn’t go down without a fight, though. They tried to keep up with South Loup, until a kill by Bryn Schwarz took the wind out of their sails and the Bobcats ran away with the win.
Leading the Bobcats with kills was Charli Vickers and Bryn Schwarz with 6 and 5 respectively; Abby Stallbaumer with 8 blocks; and Talli Martin with 41 assists.
“The girls worked so well together and really focused and dug deep to play their game,” said coach Guthrie. “Their communication and intensity was high and that brought out the team I get to see everyday in practice! They played making sure that every touch on the ball counted.”
The Lady Bobcats hosted Kearney Catholic in Callaway on Tuesday, Sept. 6, but those results were not available by press time. South Loup will host Gothenburg in Arnold on Thursday, Sept. 8, with the reserve match at 5 p.m., JV at 6 p.m., and varsity at 7 p.m.; and the Seven Valleys Tournament in Callaway on Saturday, Sept. 10, with play starting at 9:30 a.m.
