It has been a rough season for first-year head coach Ali Goodenow and her South Loup Lady Bobcats, but the girls had something to celebrate over the holiday break. After a loss to Brady in their first game of the Maxwell holiday tournament on Dec. 27, the team bounced back to hold on for a 1-point win over Sandills Valley on Saturday, Dec. 28, 36-35. South Loup has gone 9-1 against Brady recently and the Bobcats looked to pad the win column further on Friday, Dec. 27. The two teams rounded out the year against one another at the holiday tournament in Maxwell, where the Bobcats were once again victorious.

Coming off of a big victory over Brady on Friday, the Bobcats waltzed into their match on Saturday, Dec. 28, with four straight wins... but they left with five. They took down the Sandhills Valley Mavericks 48-29. That's more bragging rights for South Loup, who also won the pair's last head-to-head. It also gave the Bobcats the Maxwell Holiday Tournament championship.

In their victory against Brady in the first game of the tournament, both Crew Witthuhn and Carter Wood scored in double digits, with 16 and 11 respectively. Conner Paulsen added 9 points and Caleb McFate contributed 8 to help secure the win.

Defensively, Witthuhn pulled down 9 total rebounds and Wood came away with 5 rebounds. The quickness of Dylan Pandorf paid off, as the sophomore had 6 steals in the game.

The Mavericks of Sandhills Valley were not able to get much going against the Bobcats until the final period of the game, when both teams scored 10 points.

By that time, however, South Loup had gained such a lead it was too much for the Mavericks to overcome. Paulsen had the hot hand in the championship game scoring 18 points for the Bobcats. Paulsen also had 8 rebounds and 3 steals in the game.

Witthuhn continued his high-scoring ways contributing 16 points to help secure the win. He also pulled down 9 rebounds. AJ Starr helped out defensively with 3 steals and 3 rebounds.

The Bobcats were back on the court on Tuesday at Hershey, and host Sandhills/Thedford this evening at Arnold. The JV game tips off at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30.
