Several Events Discussed, New Member Initiated
The Legion Auxiliary met at 9:30 a.m. at the Legion. We proceeded to stuff bags with thank you notes and candy for all the school staff. This is for Education week. We then delivered them to the school, along with some supplies, like paper plates, small paint sets, glue sticks, tissues and zip lock bags, to the school. Lawrence Paulsen donated the paint sets and the rulers. The students and teachers were very appreciative of everything.
We proceeded back to the legion for our regular meeting. Amber Harrison read the prayer to start the meeting as Joyce was not in attendance. Eileen read the minutes of the last meeting. MaryAnn went through the financial report and everything was approved as reported.
Mid-Year Conference was held in Norfolk last weekend. MaryAnn attended and it was reported that it was an interesting Conference. Spring Conference is March 4 in Kearney. This is when all our books are presented for awards as to which club does the best job.
We proceeded to discuss Veterans Day Soup supper. It was brought up that there are many programs that our veterans could attend if we were not at the supper on Veterans Day. After some discussion it was voted to move our supper to the second Sunday in November. This way people can attend other programs if they so wish.
Our next project is to try and clean headstones. We will need to buy the cleaning supplies. This will start in the spring when the weather is nicer.
We talked to the students about Girls State. They received the applications and were told that an essay needs to accompany their application. There may be a conflict on dates as the Washington trip does not have a date set yet. The applications will be picked up on the 15th of February. We will meet at 4:00 p.m. after school on the 15th to judge them.
Americanism Essays are due Feb. 27. The poppy posters are due March 15. The scholarships are due March 1.
Valentine's Day is coming right up. We have placed a box in the Nigel Sprouse Library to collect the Valentines for Veterans. The box will be picked up on Feb. 8, so we have time to get them to the Veterans before Valentines Day.
Legislative Day in Lincoln is Feb. 3. That is the day any legislation for Veterans will be considered.
Junior Convention will be held in Dorchester on March 11. We will pay for the lunches of our Junior members that want to attend.
We had initiation of a new member, Amber Harrison. It was a nice celebration with prayers and readings from all officers and what we stand for was explained, with the meaning of Justice, Freedom, Democracy and Loyalty. Amber is now officially a member of the Auxiliary. There was no other business, so our meeting was adjourned with Jo reading a prayer and Deondra dismissing the meeting. Sincerely, Eileen Wilson
