It’s that time of year again – you know the twiceyearly time change? Each year the struggle to adjust increases as my biological clock takes longer and longer to reset.

Sunday Hubby and I were awake at 5 a.m. because our internal clocks said it was really 6 a.m. My stomach was also ready for breakfast and so the extra hour of sleep so many others anticipated went out the window at our house.

We had even tried staying up an hour later the night before by watching taped episodes of some of our favorite TV shows. But that didn’t fool the body clocks, no sir.

Naturally by 11 a.m. Sunday my stomach was growling as it just knew it was lunchtime. Thankfully we had just gotten out of church and the refrigerator held several nice options for leftovers. The compromise was eating at 11:30 a.m.

A mid-afternoon snack staved off the next hunger attack at 5 p.m. and I managed to wait until about 5:45 to eat the next set of leftovers. Hubby on the other hand has his tummy under better control, partly because during harvest the evening meal can come anytime between 5-9 p.m. and occasionally later. So consequently, he ate after me with no problems.

I pity parents of toddlers and preschoolers. We always struggled with our two girls during those time changes. After Cicely was born, I finally got smart and started adjusting their meals, naptimes and bedtimes by 10 minutes either direction a week before depending on whether it was “Spring Forward” or “Fall Back.”

We had fewer temper tantrums and “Hangry” attacks after this ploy, but it still meant for schedule disruptions I would rather have done without.

Those who work with individuals in senior housing also note the toll the time switch takes on attitudes and stomach clocks of their residents. My mother-inlaw, rest her soul, would not rest until someone stopped to switch the clocks at first her independent living apartment and then her assisted living residence.

Our ritual for a decade was to arrive right after church the morning of the time switch so she could proceed with her routine and be “on time.”

I can only hope the House of Representatives will take up the Sunshine Protection Act after the election, a piece of legislation that would make daylight savings time permanent and stop this nonsense of having to change clocks twice a year.

In the scope of our current national problems this might seem minor, but I find it hard to believe most of Congress can’t find some middle ground on an issue that disrupts millions twice a year. My suggestion is to be sure you contact your Congressman or Congresswoman and give them an earful to cross the aisle and compromise to get this passed.

Some would prefer we stick with standard time, whatever that means, but I’m for anything that stops the constant switching. I have alternately adjusted to both for decades, so it matters not which we pick. Just do it!
