Despite the cooler temperatures and the fierce winds, the South Loup Bobcat cross country team ran incredibly well at the District D5 tournament in Cambridge last Thursday, qualifying three runners for the state competition in Kearney.

The girls team qualified two runners Ella Cool and Ivy Tullis - and just missed qualifying the whole team. Cool finished first with a time of 21:57.15 and Tullis finished fourth with a time of 22:38.44. Gracie Neth finished 50th with a time of 30:15.17. The top three teams qualified to take all runners to state, and the Lady Bobcats finished fourth as a team.

Logan Recoy also brought home a gold medal with a time of 18:00.56. Freshman Josiah Coleman was edged out of a trip to Kearney by finishing 16th with a time of 19:05.04. Caleb McFate finished 45th with a time of 21:41.15. The boys team also finished fourth overall.

Unfortunately, the lone senior on the team, Halie Recoy, was unable to overcome her foot injury sustained during last year’s track season to compete at the district tournament.

Coleman, McFate, and Neth all ran personal bests on this course and will return to run next year.

All three qualifiers ran last year at state in Kearney in chilly weather. Logan Recoy finished 70th with a time of 19:17.4.

Cool finished 28th with a time of 22:45.69 and Tullis in 41st with a time of 23:43.90.

All three runners posted better times by nearly or more than a minute when running this course earlier in the season.

The Bobcats will run Friday at the Kearney Country Club at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Logan Recoy will run around 12 noon and Cool and Tullis will run around 1 p.m. with awards to follow around 2 p.m.
