Cache Gracey ended his junior season on the track by making some noise at the NSAA State Track and Field Championships in Omaha May 20-21.
Gracey, along with Trey Connell, Logan Recoy and Silas Cool came into the state meet in the 16th seed in the 3200 meter relay.
They adopted the motto “Worst to First” and according to coach Rick Peterson, they almost made that mantra true.
The team had a brillant performance, anchored by Cool who came down the stretch in a fight for position against Hastings St. Cecelia and Hartington Cedar Catholic.
With only hundreths of a second separating the runners and both anchors for St. Cecelia and Cedar Catholic hitting the track at the tape, the photo finish saw Cool in the second place spot and the Bobcat boys had won silver.
The personal-best time was a race that will not be forgotten any time soon.
Rio Remund took on the field in the shot put and the sophomore ended his day in 22nd place in the event.
Gracey finished first in his heat of the 400 meters, enroute to a third place finish in the finals, his second medal of the meet.
Connell took on the field in the 3200 meters after a grueling 4 x 800 meter relay.
The sophomore distance runner improved his time on the season by more than one minute to finish 23rd in a difficult field.
In the 800 meters, Gracey and Cool ran in the same heat of the event.
Gracey got out around the pack to take sixth place in the event and Cool took 18th place overall.
Peterson said that race has a tendency to be chaotic as 12 runners in each heat vie for position coming off the first curve, which makes it easy to get boxed in.
Cool ran into that problem and will take that experience into next year.
Recoy got himself in great position for a medal in the 1600 meters but had a hard time keeping that pace and finished the event in 23rd place.
Peterson said he was impressed with the number of fans who came to support the Bobcats from both Callaway and Arnold.
“All of the coaches would like to thank you for that, as well as your support throughout the year,” he said. “I really enjoy that, much like the coaches, you get to celebrate the frequent victories and improvements we have seen throughout this year.”
