50 YEARS AGO:

Rich Jorgenson of the Jorgenson Well Drilling has announced the sale of his business to Bill Lynch and Tom Holm of Broken Bow. Both plan to move to Callaway at a later date. The new name of the business is Seven Valleys Well Works.

Several Callaway streets got resurfaced last week. Village employees helped direct traffic and other necessary jobs.

The Paul Ridder Ranch took the reserve honor with a senior heifer calf at the State Fair Hereford Show in the Nebraska class. Greg received two blue ribbons, a 1st and 2nd place with his summer and fall heifers in 4-H.

25 YEARS AGO:

The Callaway school board held a special session to pass a negotiated teacher contract that raises the teacher base pay 7 percent over last year, and it may not be the last major increase. The base salary for starting teachers went from $20,700 to $22,500.

Callaway High School students who took the ACT college entrance exam during the 2000-01 school year scored significantly higher than the state and national average. The Callaway average of 25.4 compares to the Nebraska average of 22.5 and the national average of 21.9.

20 YEARS AGO:

Property taxpayers will be asked to contribute $80,990 to the 2006-07 Village of Callaway budget. The board voted 4-0 to pass a proposed budget of $960,000 and also voted 4-0 to pass the tax levy which will be 49.5506 cents for every $100 of property valuation.

The Lady Bears needed only six games to win three matches and take their own Seven Valleys Volleyball Tournament last Saturday.

No one ever said a team had to be pretty to win. With 110 yards in penalties and three turnovers, the Bears football team still managed to find a way to beat the S-E-M Mustangs 28-20 on their home turf last Friday.
