50 YEARS AGO:

Three Callaway businesses will be hosting grand openings, and one a grand re-opening, July 22-24. The businesses include the Callaway Market, Right Drug Store, L&L Lumber Co., and Jerry’s Steakhouse.

All individuals, clubs, civic groups, and fraternal organizations are urged to participate in the 1976 Custer County Fair parade to be held in downtown Broken Bow. The Bicentennial theme of “American 1776 - 1876 1976” will be followed.

The Callaway Sluggers were defeated in their last game of the season by one point when they fell to the Peppermint Patties by a score of 13-12. Scoring for Callaway were Diane Lawrence, Cindy Hanson, Teresa Brestel, Angie Farmer, Maria Clouse, Julie Wright, and Christie Leonard. Pitcher for the Sluggers was Janel Woodward.

25 YEARS AGO:

There’s still work to be done but the first Custer County Courthouse in Morgan Park is now sitting on a new foundation, rotting cedar logs have been replaced, and new chinking is in place. According to a report by Seven Valleys Historical Society Director Lorraine Smith to the Callaway Village Board, the senior citizens first promoted and then began a fund drive for the restoration in October 1999.

Visitors in the home of Irene Snyder were Marjorie Witthuhn, Doris Chesley, Sheryl Shite of North Platte, Donna Myers, and Shawna Levi.

Nancy and Junior Willis, Lucille Ward, and Mary Jane Pandorf drove to Mary Jane’s cabin near North Platte on Sunday and all had supper.

20 YEARS AGO:

With the help of a single $100 grant, 21 children are getting a summer’s worth of reading. Callaway teachers Wendy Dockweiler and Karen Weverka are sponsoring a summer reading program titled “Come Catch the Summer Reading Wave” at Callaway Public School. Its theme is vacation and travel.

Fifty descendants of Harry and Anna Chesley gathered in the home of Dave and Jo Chesley to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the Seyerson-Chesley Homestead.
