The South Loup Bobcats boys’ track team went into the C-8 District Track and Field Championships on May 12 with a mission, and got right down to work in the field events.

The Bobcats started the scoring out with Silas Cool taking third and Jamie Tickle fifth in the pole vault.

Running events started much the same way as the girls, with the quartet of Cache Gracey, Logan Recoy, Trey Connell and Cool winning the 3200 relay, the first event on the track.

After preliminary running events, the Bobcats got their first individual event gold on the track, as speedy sophomore Gracey won the first of two golds on the day, blazing to an easy win in the 400 meters.

Not yet finished with the early running events, Connell qualified for another event in the state meet as he raced to silver in the 3200 meters.

The second session of field events were more successful for the Bobcats as Rio Remund set his personal best when he won the shot put, followed closely by his teammate Lance Jones in fourth place.

Also scoring in this field events session was A.J Starr with a sixth place finish in the high jump.

The finals began with increasing wind and cloudy skies but the Bobcats did not let that deter them as they were on a roll.

The 800 meter duo of Gracey and Cool again challenged one another to the finish as Gracey crossed the line .002 second before Cool.

The 1600 meter run was all Recoy, as he ran away from the field in winning his event and qualifying for state in his second event.

The final scoring event for the boys was the 4x400 relay, where the team of Remund, Harper Johnson, Recoy and highlighted by a blazing anchor of Cool finished in fifth place.

The boys finished the day eight points behind district champion Wood River, but Coach Chesley was more than happy with the boys' hard work and good efforts.
