Lady Bobcats C-8 District Champions
Vickers and Stallbaumer Break School Records
The Lady Bobcats ended the regular season not losing a meet this year, as they outdistanced the competition at the C-8 District meet at Southern Valley on May 12.
The girls qualified 12 girls for the NSAA State Track and Field Championships May 20-21 at Omaha Burke Stadium.
In the early round field events, the girls got off to a somewhat slow start, as Isabelle Stallbaumer, who placed fourth in the shot put, was the only girl to place.
But the Lady Bobcats were just getting started. The girls came out of first round field events with only four points, but in the first event on the track, the girls ran to a gold medal finish to get things rolling.
The quartet of Ivy Tullis, Faith Bierman, Heidi Donegan and Tallianna Martin maintained the lead throughout the race, and at the end was punctuated by the blazing anchor leg of Martin.
The girls won more first places on the day than any other placing, with Ella Cool taking the gold in the 3200 meter run to keep that trend rolling.
The freshman has been bothered by a hip injury lately, and battled pain throughout the eight-lap race to punch her ticket to state.
After a one-hour storm delay sheltered in the gym, the meet got started with the second round of field events, which were to be much more fruitful for the girls.
Reagan Cool, in the pole vault, easily overwhelmed the field as she won the event by 18 inches.
Abby Stallbaumer again bettered her own record with a 138 foot throw in the discus for a gold-medal finish.
The final session of track events began with Charli Vickers bettering her 100 meter hurdle record set in 2021 for bronze.
The 100 meter dash was perhaps the most exciting race of the day, as the duo of Bryn Schwarz and Halie Recoy placed third and fourth, respectively, in a stacked field.
Schwarz’s third-place time was good enough to be an additional qualifier.
In the 1600 meters, teammates Ivy Tullis and Tallianna Martin have battled it out all year, and this race was to be no different.
Martin broke the strong winds throughout the three and one half laps, and then the kick was on with Tullis winning this time and Martin taking second.
Halie Recoy placed fourth in the 200 meters and it was time for the relays.
The 400 meter relay has been a very strong relay all year for the girls but one of the state leaders was in the race.
The Wood River team dropped the baton at the first exchange and the girls took advantage of the mistake and raced to the victory.
Joslyn Reiff, Schwarz, Ross and Recoy will all run this event at the state meet.
In the final event of the day, the team of Tullis, Abby Stallbaumer, Ross and Schwarz ran their second fastest time of the season but finished second to a strong Amherst team.
The girls defeated second place Amherst by 18 points securing another district championship.
