Principal Dave Weber swept his last gym floor at halftime of the game last week, generating a cheer from basketball fans who know he has done this simple duty for years. Weber is retiring after nearly 40 years of teaching and administration in the district.

Callaway’s application for “Bicentennial Community” status has been approved by the Nebraska American Revolution Bicentennial Commission and has been forwarded on to the regional Bicentennial Commission in Kansas City. Following the approval of regional and national commissions, Callaway will be able to receive its bicentennial flag.

The American Legion Consignment deadline is Feb. 28, so if you have been thinking of listing some items but just haven’t got around to it, get on the stick. We need listings to make the sale a big success as it has been in past years.

The Callaway Certified Crop Care Center hosted its grand opening on Feb. 12 with 123 farmers and friends attending. New manager Jerald Cantrell was on hand to greet the guests and help feed sausage and pancakes.

Callaway utility customers will pay more for water, sewer, and trash pickup starting in April. The Callaway Village Board of Trustees decided it was time for the increases during its February meeting. Water will go from $10 per month to $12, and sewer will rise from $4 per month to $5.

Longtime second grade teacher Iris Anderson announced her intentions to retire from Callaway Public School. She has taught at Callaway for 34 years. While one retires, two more will come on board - Ron Ready of Wauneta as principal, and Mary Beshaler of Arnold as guidance counselor.
