BLAST FROM THE PAST
A hole in the ground is all that is left of the Callahans' farm home near Oconto.
Body

50 YEARS AGO:

Fire departments from Oconto, Callaway, and Eddyville were called to a house fire south and east of Oconto on Jan. 6. The farm home of Willis Callahan and his wife, Onna, was completely destroyed.

On Saturday, Jan. 3, Laurence Oxford, who works on a ranch near Oconto, caught his hand in a grinder. He lost most of his fingers on the right hand.

20 YEARS AGO:

District 180 Board of Education reorganized for 2006 in its monthly meeting at the school. Tony Pitkin was elected president of the board, while Julianna Jenkins became vice president, Keri Schneringer will serve another term as secretary, and Tom Kennedy Jr. was elected treasurer.

A need to raise electrical rates for customers served by the Village of Callaway solidified a bit during the January regular meeting of the Village Board. The board decided to table the issue pending further review of the rate study. It will be addressed again at the Feb. 7 meeting.
