BLAST FROM THE PAST
50 YEARS AGO:
Jim Bennett, local town marshal, warns local citizens of the apparent theft of rifles out of parked pickups. If you keep your firearms in your pickup, lock your doors. Reports have also been made of missing fuel in the area. Report it immediately if your fuel has been stolen.
The Callaway Courier staff greeted and served coffee and cookies to almost 100 persons at their open house. Several persons took advantage of the special subscription discount and 30 boxes of Christmas cards were given away.
20 YEARS AGO:
Effects from the blizzard on Nov. 27 are still being felt as residents in the region struggle to dig out and get back to a normal routine. Motorists continue to have accidents or get stuck. Some cattle were reported killed in the blizzard, and hundreds of center irrigation pivots were knocked over in wind gusts of up to 75 mph.
A heat lamp being used to thaw frozen pipes was blamed for a house fire at the Kent Lovitt home east of Oconto. Two St. Bernard dogs that were in the house at the time of the blaze were lost. Lovitt, who was not home but returned before firefighters arrived, was taken to Callaway Hospital, where he was treated for smoke inhalation.
