50 YEARS AGO:

Residents of Callaway and the surrounding area were busy all weekend digging out of 6 to 8-foot drifts that came out of the snowstorm that hit here early the morning of Nov. 19. An unofficial report by one who shoveled their share was 8 to 10 inches. A freezing rain caught the livestock off guard and the snow hit, causing some losses in the area.

As of press time on Tuesday, Nov. 25, fresh snow is falling and skies are gray as though it will continue.

An estimated 4 inches of new snow is on the ground, and school has been called off the rest of the week.

Boys’ basketball got underway on Nov. 17, with John Stritt in charge of coaching duties. Coach Stritt reported there are 30 boys out this year, with only three returning lettermen: Monty Birnie, Stan Weatherly, and Duane Hickenbottom.
