The office of the Callaway District Hospital public transit service has a new home.

The transportation program was implemented by the hospital three years ago, and CEO Brett Eggleston says many local people still don’t understand the full scope of the services the program provides.

“Most people think that because they see hospital on the side, that it’s available just for healthcare. It’s not. It is completely open,” Eggleston explained. “I tell people you kind of have to think of it as a taxi.

It can take you to the grocery store, to visit a family member in Omaha, to Kearney to Walmart - really anywhere that you want to go.”

There is a per-mile charge for the service, which is available for any type of transportation.

The office is now located in the building that once housed a dental office, just east of Sand Creek Bar.

Two new vans have been added, bringing the total number of the fleet to three.

“Initially, our availability was pretty limited with just one van and one driver. Now we have really expanded that, with three vans and three drivers, and are more available than we have been in the past,” said Eggleston. “Obviously, they do appreciate it if you can schedule those rides at least a couple of days in advance. That way, we make sure we have somebody available.”

To schedule a ride, please call (308) 212-0464. Reservations are based on space and schedule availability, so call as far in advance as is practical.
