Sometimes, when one least expects it, recognition comes. No one was more surprised than Bob Gavin of Callaway when he learned he had been nominated and won the American Legion’s District 6 Distinguished Service Medal in the Field of American Citizenship. There are 16 Legion districts in Nebraska. “I really don’t know what I did to deserve this,” Gavin said Saturday morning. National executive committee officer Doug Boldt said he wouldn’t reveal who nominated Gavin but cited several criteria in which he was recognized. Community involvement, public speaking, leadership and administration, and Legion activities were among those named.
