Spend Some Time in Your Happy Place
Sometimes I feel totally exhausted from all the noise and distractions of our world. Does anyone else feel that way? May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and though the month may be over, I think it is important to make our mental health a priority every month!
I’ve heard people say, “I’m taking a mental health day.” - meaning they are just going to unplug from the world for a bit and recharge. While I like to do that too, what I find most helpful is just beginning my day with a little “recharge”.
We have a screened sunroom on the back of our house that overlooks the backyard, with my bird feeders and trees. An indoor/outdoor carpet lines the cement floor, and old patio furniture provides semi-comfortable seating. It is my sanctuary, my favorite room of the house.
Each morning, I take my cup of coffee and retreat to the sunroom for my quiet time to begin the day—or at least I try. Some days, the busy schedule makes that more difficult unless I get up earlier—and anyone who knows me very well will tell you I have never been a real early riser.
However, if I miss my sunroom time, it seems the whole day is a little off kilter. Ironically, the days that my calendar is exceptionally busy seem to be the days I am in most need of sunroom time!
I find myself in a stage of life where I am becoming much less apologetic for taking “me” time, or for allowing myself to be guilted into something that doesn’t fit my schedule well. I don’t think it is self-centered…it is self-care.
Don’t be afraid to do the things that make you happy. It is not uncommon to see me driving down the street listening to my 70s music cranked on the radio while I’m singing at the top of my lungs and dancing in the car seat! It makes me happy.
There are constant reminders all around us of how short our time here is. This weekend is my family reunion, and I will get to share memories and laughs with some of my siblings, children, and grandchildren. That makes me very happy!
So this week, I encourage you to find your sanctuary, your happy place, and spend some time there. No apologies. No guilt. Treasure the time.
