March 5, 1998 - PHOTO 98 Dist. Champs: The Callaway Lady Bears won the District Championship to earn a trip to the State Basketball tournament. Members of that team include Sara Florom, Morgan Myers, assistant coach Darin Ellis, Melissa Scott, Kenna Scheringer, Libs Devine, Milissa Willis, Marci Johnson, Hilary Nichelson, coach Colleen Chapman, Julie Jochum, Linsey Pandorf and Britt Sommer. That team would go on to win the State Runner-Up trophy.

We have archives that date back a bit, so we did a bit of a dive into some things that have happened in Callaway.

Enjoy this trip down memory lane with the first of two weeks’ worth of memories.

March 4, 1982 - The district basketball tournament was hosted in Cozad where the Callaway Bears took on the Amherst Broncos. The Bears lost the district semifinal game.

August 30, 1984 - Callaway Women Compete in Tennis Tourney - Margie Kimball and Carolyn Schneringer participated in the Arnold Jaycees tennis tournament

Aug. 25-26. Schneringer defeated Nancy Cool, 10-0 and Kimball defeated Bernie Crow 10-2. In the finals, Kimball defeated Scherninger 10-6. The tournament included a mixed-doubles division where RIch Hornung and Kimball placed third.

January 30, 1986 - Callaway one-act play finished second at the C-10 district competition with their performance of “The 15-Minute Hamlet.” Cast members included Sally Shea, Colette Stallbaumer, Michelle Sheppard, Barb Gardner, Elizabeth Hoesel, Cindy Murphy, Paige Wolken and Janet Ridder.

Feb. 2, 1989 - Callaway converted seven of 13 free throws to earn a thrilling,48-43 double-overtime girls’ basketball victory at Arnold. The teams entered overtime tied at 37-37 and each team scored two points in the first OT. The Lady Bears pulled away in the second overtime, thanks to success at the freethrow line.

Sept. 6, 1990 - The Callaway Cloverettes 4-H singing group won a blue-plus ribbon at the Nebraska State Fair. Amy Neth, Courtney Schuller, Joleen Kalinowski, Leah Wendorff and Mary Wendorff made up the winning group of singers.

March 7, 1991 - The Callaway Lady Bears won the Class D1 State Runner-Up trophy at the NSAA State Basketball Tournament. Team members included Trisha Aspegren, Erin Boldt, Teri Schulz, Tristin Wilson, Milissa Lloyd, assistant coach Juli Hlavac, Danielle Ridder, Marla Struem, Sharon Stallbaumer, Kelly Aspegren, Roxanne Grove and head coach Colleen Chapman.

Oct. 22, 1992 - The Callaway Bears beat the Arnold Cardinals 58-44. Von Grove rushed for 288 yards and four touchdowns, including a 60-yard punt return. Christ Pandorf passed five times with three completions and two touchdowns to Travis Newton for 42 yards.

Sept 22, 1994 - John and Barbara Newcombe took over management of the Callaway Cafe. The Newcombs extended the hours of the cafe and offered fresh-baked pies and rolls, added daily noon specials, a Friday night buffet and Sunday specials.
