School Board Elects 2024 Officers
The Callaway Board of Education conducted a special meeting Monday evening, prior to the regular meeting of the board in the school library. The special meeting was for the purpose of reviewing candidates for the superintendent position being vacated by Bryon Hanson at the end of the 2023-24 school year. No action was taken during the special meeting.
The regular meeting began with the election of officers for 2024. Mike Reiff will retain his role as president of the board; vice president is Rhonda Pandorf, Liana Hrupek was elected secretary, and Jim Phelps treasurer. Following the election of officers, board committees were appointed.
The board moved into action items on the regular agenda with a review of the superintendent contract format, which Reiff explained needed to be set prior to the interviews and negotiation of a new superintendent contract. The board approved the format that was presented.
Superintendent Hanson shared that he has received several phone calls pertaining to transporting students to school, and asked the board for direction on how the district wants to address that. 'I feel like we could have a couple of designated spots to pick up as the buses are coming back into town,' said Hanson. 'Anything we do within a four-mile radius will keep us within state statutes.'
After a great deal of discussion, the board decided to put the item on the February agenda for further discussion and possible action.
In one other action item, the board regretfully accepted the resignation of sixth grade teacher Sara Reish.
The next regular meeting of the Callaway Board of Education was set for Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. The board will conduct a special meeting on Monday, Jan. 15, at 12:30 p.m. in the school library for the purpose of superintendent candidate interviews. That meeting is also open to the public.
