POPPY DAY
Body

National Poppy Day is observed on the Friday preceding Memorial Day. On Sept 27, 1920, the red poppy became the official flower of Legion Family. Poppies represent the blood shed during wartimes and the servicemen who have died in battle while serving our country. Red crepe paper poppies are made by Veterans and other volunteers and all donations received are used for various Veteran programs. The poppies are distributed by Legion Auxiliary members to those desiring to give a donation. Several Junior Auxiliary members of Unit #59 helped with Poppy Day held in Callaway on May 24. Shown front to back are Junior members Lauren Reiff, Josie Reiff, and Kaygan Witthuhn accepting a donation from an employee of a local business. (Photo courtesy Jo Chesley)
