The Custer County Fair was held from July 29 - Aug.

4, and many area youngsters showed various projects and livestock through their involvement with 4-H and FFA. The County Fair is a big deal here, and many families spend the entire week in campers on the fairgrounds. The judging competitions and livestock sale are the culmination of a year’s worth of work for many of these kids.

According to Sandhills Express news reporter Emily Barnett, Extension Educator Troy Walz shared the numbers of this year’s entries in the livestock auction during the Aug. 11 Ag Society meeting. “The total auction amount was $361,032.89. That was up $47,000 from last year,” Walz shared. “We had 84 cattle go through the ring, 39 sheep, 68 hogs, and 17 goats. We had an excellent auction.”

The majority of kids in the Callaway and Oconto area belong to either the Tail Twisters or Oconto 4-H club.
