There are currently two proposed bills being reviewed by the Nebraska Legislature which could change how we tell time in our state moving forward.

I have been doing a lot of contemplating on the issue in recent weeks, trying to decide which one I would be more in favor of - Daylight Saving Time or Central Standard Time - all the time.

It reminds me of an old song from back in my very early years by the group Chicago, “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?”. A couple of times a year that is certainly a legitimate question! My clock may say it is 5 p.m., but my belly says it’s supper time. It’s so confusing!

On the one hand, I really like having daylight later in the evenings for my husband Jody and I to get outdoors and walk, or grill on the patio. But then there are days when I enjoy the fact that by 5:30 p.m. it is getting dark and I can put on my PJs as soon as I get home from work and have a lazy evening. I am also not an early morning person and really don’t like getting up when it is still dark, so the way I see it there are benefits to both options.

LB34 proposes adopting permanent Daylight Saving Time, contingent on federal approval and neighboring states' adoption, and LB302 calls for permanent Standard Time, contingent on neighboring states' adoption. Both of those bills advanced for final reading last week so it will be interesting to see how that turns out. Where you, personally, land on the issue may be determined by what you do for a living, if you have to travel for work, if you are an active outdoors person, or any other number of factors.

Of course, there is also a third option which is to leave things as they are - though I would be surprised if that happens.

After weighing the pros and cons I find myself landing in the camp of supporting permanent Daylight Saving Time. Above all, I just really like the idea of not having to change and readjust twice a year. Sadly, there isn’t an option to add more time.

Is it supper time yet?
