Good BBQ, Beautiful Scenery, Great Cause This Weekend
There are not a lot of community events that have the distinction of running for more than 75 years, but the Camp Comeca Cookout is one of the exceptions. This August, the Camp will host its 76th annual finger- lickin’ good cookout - and you will not want to miss it!
The first event was held in 1950, the same year the Cozad Methodist Church established Camp Comeca in the beautiful hills south of Cozad and Gothenburg. Overlooking Midway Lake, the picturesque setting is perfect for a church camp - and ideal for serving a large group of people fantastic BBQ food.
The cookout began with a tradition of serving buffalo meat, which continued for a number of years. That has since given way to barbecued ribs and chicken, guaranteed to be some of the best you will find anywhere around.
About six years ago, the United Methodist Church sold the camp to a group of local individuals who formed Cozad Camping Ministry. The cookout provides an opportunity for the camp staff and volunteers to “show off” the grounds to those who may not be familiar, as well as raise funds to help with camp expenses.
“We are excited to continue the camp’s mission of sharing Christ without a denominational affiliation. The Comeca staff remains committed to providing a Christ-centered experience for everyone,” said Camp Director Justin Hoehner.
The 76th annual cookout is set for Saturday, Aug. 8, from 5:30-8 p.m. at the camp located at 75670 Rd. 417, Cozad. While buffalo burgers may have been the draw at one time, nowadays it is the famous BBQ ribs. In fact, the ribs are so popular that the cookers always make extra to sell to those in attendance who may want to take some home.
There is no set fee for attending the cookout - it is strictly free-will donations. “There is no cost for admission, but there will be a donation station where you can contribute to Comeca's ministry if you feel led to give,” explained Amy Hoehner, Camp Development Coordinator. “Whether this is your first time visiting, or you've been a camper for decades, we'd love to see you there!”
Along with the great meal, guests will enjoy fun inflatables, mini golf, camp activities, hiking trails, and sno cones. The gift shop will also be open that evening, and everyone is free to explore the grounds and see what all Comeca has to offer.
