Callaway’s American Legion Auxiliary is Here to Serve
The Callaway American Legion Auxiliary continues to serve Veterans and to promote Americanism in the community. The efforts of Unit #59 may not always be seen, but many projects take place in the area due to the efforts of the local Legion Auxiliary members. This group of dedicated women feel it is important to educate the public on how we serve our community.
Some of our projects differ from year to year and others are ongoing. The Senior Auxiliary members recently finished cleaning Veteran headstones in Rose Hill Cemetery, a project that was started two years ago. Our project to place a Christmas wreath at each Veteran grave in Rose Hill was years in the planning stage and fund raising and we now have enough wreaths for all Veterans buried there plus extra wreaths for families that request a wreath for their Veteran buried in a local rural cemetery.
We often help the school with requests for classroom items or by filling backpacks with school supplies for students in need. Our Unit helps the Legion members and Sons of the Legion members put up the Avenue of Flags and also place small flags at each Veteran grave and each Auxiliary member grave in seven local cemeteries.
We participate in the Trunk and Treat event and Free concessions for the Children’s Carnival and for the 4th of July activities have been an ongoing project for many years. We promote participation in Poppy Poster contests and essay contests during the school year and always sponsor at least one girl attending the Girls State Convention.
However, our main goal is to serve the Veterans and Legion members in any possible way and to promote that same attitude to the community. We welcome new members. Please contact a Unit #59 member to see if you are eligible.
