BLAST FROM THE PAST
50 YEARS AGO:
Over 80 persons from Callaway, Arnold, Stapleton, Oconto, and Eddyville attended a meeting at the Callaway fire hall in a fight to keep the Kearney railroad branch open between Stapleton and Arnold. Larry Mowrey of Callaway Ag Service presided over the meeting.
The red hot golf clubs of Gene Schneringer continued to be the terror of Central Nebraska tournaments this summer as he won the Mullen Open Golf Tournament on Sunday, Aug. 3. Schneringer won the tournament with a score of 68.
20 YEARS AGO:
A passing lightning storm left a little rain, but a number of grass fires started from Highway 21 north and east of Oconto. Oconto firefighters responded to one 10-acre fire on the Cristensen Ranch, while Broken Bow firefighters fought a 30acre fire further east.
Oconto Public School officials are struggling to learn all they can about the procedures required by LB 126 to turn the school system over to a K-12 program by June 13, 2006. LB 126, which forces all 231 Class I schools to consolidate with a K-12 school by June 13, 2006, was passed by the legislature in the last session.
