Callaway High’s athletic teams will open their seasons this week, with the Bear football team taking on Lexington St. Ann, then hosting Arcadia, Greeley, and Ansley. On the volleyball scene, the CHS spikers begin with a home game against Arnold, then will host Litchfield. Carolyn Kollmeier will be announcing home contests this year, and Brian Gardner will have sponsorship of the pep club. The pep club will be composed of both boys and girls this year.

Robert Johnson, age 62, was found dead in his home of an apparent heart attack. Mrs. Walter Johnson, an aunt, had tried to reach him and became alarmed when she called his neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Duane Henry, who went to check on him. They found him dead in his bed.

If numbers mean anything for the success of a volleyball team, the Lady Bears have them. There are 23 players out this season, way up from 14 out for the team that finished 10-9 a year ago.

CHS head football coach Ken Rigler said his team has 10 returning letter winners, but only two seniors - Joe Ridder and J.R. Venekamp.

Visitors last week in the Evelyn Schipporeit home were Shari Sheppard, Tami Smith, Marge Leighd, Irene Snyder, Donna Hogg and Roxie Meyer.

Mary and Ashton Wendorff were Thursday to Sunday guests in the home of Mike Wendorff. Leah and Trevor Beckenhauer of Kearney were Saturday night and Sunday guests.

Callaway Elementary School students rolled out the welcome mat for Oconto Elementary School students, greeting them with placards and cheers as they stepped off the bus. It was the first week where Oconto students were bused to Callaway for lunch, instruction in art, library and music, as well as social time with their Callaway counterparts.
