50 YEARS AGO:

Damon Murray, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Murray of rural Callaway, was struck by a rattlesnake as he was playing in the family yard. Damon and his brother Jeff were playing around an old chicken coop when both decided to investigate the funny noise. Damon got too close and was bitten while his brother ran to tell his mother. Mrs. Murray promptly called the rescue unit, put a tourniquet on the boy, and lanced the wound. She then began to suck the poison from the bite. He was transferred to the hospital in Kearney and will be released soon.

25 YEARS AGO:

The Seven Valleys 4-H Club of Callaway earned the grand championship for their booth promoting 4-H and their club activities at the Custer County Fair.

Callaway Kids Klub will kick off the season with a hayride and hot dog roast after school on Sept. 5 at the Community Church. The program is non-denominational and open to all children kindergarten through 5th grade.

20 YEARS AGO:

School District 180 welcomed four new teachers to the Callaway and Oconto facilities when school started last week. They are Mary Beshaler, Judy Sikes, Ruth Bishop, and Becky Roe.

The 16th Annual Callaway Kite Flight is shaping up, but more work remains to be done. Members of the Callaway Chamber are urged to meet at the site for cleanup on Aug. 28. Supper will be provided after the work is done.
