Callaway Village Marshal Leonard Hall was fired by the Village Board on a 4-0 vote at their regular meeting on Aug. 3. The board cited several complaints by local residents and also Hall’s lack of compliance with requests that they had made of his actions at their July meeting.

A proposed 1976-77 budget of $550,645 was adopted by the Board of Education of Callaway Public School. The possibility of adding a wrestling program to the budget was discussed. An estimate of $5-6,000 to initiate such a program was put forth by Superintendent Wright. Following discussion, the board felt that given the present financial condition of the district, it would not be possible to add wrestling at this time.

The Callaway Village Board voted to authorize spending approximately $16,400 to buy tables and chairs as well as to finish the kitchen facility in the new community use center. The board also accepted a tentative proposal from Callaway Public School to rent the facility for student activities and approved an advisory board. Tony Pitkin, Dave Weber, Rod Brestel, Randy Kimball, Denise Nichelson, and Tom Uden will make up the board with a seventh member to be named later.

The Callaway Rural Fire District Board received a pleasant surprise at its Monday meeting - a check for $7,500. The Peter Kiewit Foundation made the donation in appreciation of the department’s contribution of men and equipment to help fight the Valentine fire last month.

From the Callaway News: Margaret Willis celebrated her 91st birthday as her family, Joan Downey of Merna, Junior Willis, and Burton Willis took her to Kearney for dinner at a chicken restaurant.

Opal Wendorff entertained bridge Friday afternoon. Mae Chilton and Mary Smith were guests. The monthly senior potluck was held at the Senior Center with around 41 in attendance.
