The Callaway Village Cafe was burgled early on the morning of July 28, shortly after midnight. Between $70 and $80 in cash and coins were taken from the cafe. Entry into the cafe was gained through a bathroom window in the back room.

Severe thunderstorms on July 27 and July 29, did considerable crop damage in the Callaway area and tree damage in Callaway. Glen Longmore and Rich Jorgenson suffered 100 percent corn crop losses, while Alex Schneider had 85 percent loss on July 27. In the early morning hours of July 29 another severe thunderstorm hit the Callaway area, leaving several residences with huge tree branches in their yards, and some trees around town were reported to have fallen.

Leif Chesley and Traci Pandorf had good showings at the 4-H Open Custer County Horse Show on July 21. Chesley placed fourth in senior tiedown roping, fifth in heading, third in senior goat tying, first in senior poles, and second in senior barrels. Pandorf placed second in junior barrels and fourth in junior poles.

Around 50 area residents gathered for the meeting of the Seven Valleys Historical Society at the Senior Center to hear a number of volunteers recount instances in the history of the region. Several volunteers recounted historical events, reminisced about the old days, or recited text.

20 YEARS AGO:

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman will be in Callaway on Aug. 7 to tour Callaway District Hospital. Citizens of Callaway and the surrounding area have had two opportunities to hear a presentation on the Nebraska Community Foundation’s Hometown Competitiveness program, and an effort is afoot to make it a reality. As a result, an as-yet-informal group is now seeking out and defining the initial leadership that will be required to make HTC go.
