BLAST FROM THE PAST
50 YEARS AGO:
Brian Gardner, guidance counselor at Callaway High School, was announced as the Outstanding Young Educator during the Broken Bow Jaycees Awards Banquet. There were 105 persons in attendance with Monte Griffin as the guest speaker. A portable home breathing machine has been donated to the Callaway Hospital by the Parker Calvin family in memory of Stella Wilson. Also, a beautiful and much-needed coat rack was made and donated by Bill Street.
25 YEARS AGO:
According to hard numbers updated from previous estimates, Callaway gained 98 people for a grand total of 637 population from the last census in 1990. That’s 18.2 percent growth in 10 years.
Three members of the Callaway High School speech team won medals at the Nebraska State Speech Championships held at UNK. Leslie Riler placed second in persuasive, Matt Birnie placed third in entertainment, and Jessica Province placed third in poetry.
