Reading the article in the Oct. 19 issue of the Courier about the Callaway Hospital receiving recognition brought back memories for my wife and me. It was 51 years ago, when Callaway was searching for a doctor that we had a part in Ron Sheppard, MD, eventually moving to Callaway.

I was interning with a physician in Northern Kentucky who knew a physician in New Jersey who might be interested. Officials in Callaway paid the expenses for the three of us, our spouses, and our 2-year-old son to visit Callaway as a possible place for one of them to practice medicine.

The car that we rented in Omaha, after flying from Cincinnati, had mechanical problems and Wayne Hogg was kind enough to take care of it for us.

I remember the banner on Main Street as these special guests were given a wonderful reception. Leo Wendorf cut some great Nebraska steaks for a meal that we had at the farm of Alex Schneider. My wife and I, being locals, were able to introduce the special guests to many people during our short visit.

Although my friend didn’t choose to come to Callaway, Dr Sheppard later chose to set up practice and the rest is history!

We wanted to share this story as many of the readers don’t know either my wife, Vickey (Pierce), or me but we still remember that special weekend and the people who made it possible. As we have witnessed from the people of Callaway many times, the vision of a few people can lead to great results and progress.
