If there is one thing we all learn living in a small community, it is the importance of neighbors helping neighbors. The blessing that comes with having others volunteer their time to assist someone in need is priceless.

Next week, April 19-25, is National Volunteer Week. Established in 1974, the week celebrates the impact of volunteers in communities, encourages service, and highlights the vital role volunteers play.

Here in Callaway, the list of volunteers for various organizations and events is very long. From meeting with young people at the school once a week through the TeamMates program, helping run concession stands at sporting and community events, and dressing up in costumes and handing out treats to kids at Halloween and Christmas.

Then there are those who give of their time on a more frequent basis by serving on local boards and committees, which usually entails much more than just a meeting once a month.

Recent events, however, shine a light on a special group of local volunteers - our firefighters and EMS crew. As wildfires ravaged thousands of acres of our neighbors’ land, many men and women sprang into action to help. From manning pumper trucks and grass rigs to help actually fight the fires, to helping relocate people and animals, we witnessed firsthand unselfish humanism in its truest form.

With each passing year, I become more aware of the value of each hour in my day. We may all have different income levels, different gifts and abilities, but we all have 24 hours every day. What we choose to do with that time is totally up to each of us.

Some hoard their time for themselves, devoted entirely to work and family. Others strive to find a compromising balance between time for themselves and giving back to their community and neighbors. Then there are those rare individuals who put others' needs ahead of their own.

If you find yourself more in the first category I spoke of, I encourage you to explore a way to share your time and give back. It doesn’t have to be a lot to make a difference. If everyone puts just a little in the pot, it will soon be full.

For those of you who have built your life around serving others - thank you! This community is a special place because of people like you!
